Teaching English in Taiwan
Teaching English in Taiwan is still a very attractive opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds. Taiwan is an Island slightly larger than the states of Maryland and Delaware combined off the coast of China, Despite what you hear & see in the media Taiwan is an independent country with it's own Democratic Government, Currency and National Flag. The Language spoken by the Taiwanese is Mandarin Chinese & a form of Hokkien/Hoklo or Taiwanese, The level of English spoken in Taiwan is poor and the government is behind a big effort to change that. How easy is it to get a job? Getting a job teaching English in Taiwan is actually a lot easier than you may think, some prefer to find a job before arriving yet most just show up and have no problem finding a job a few weeks after arriving. At the bottom I have listed some sites with more information on Teaching in Taiwan. What is required? Basically if you have a white face and speak passable English your set, although I have met a few Scottish people teaching here :-O To get a legal teaching job with work permit and Alien Resident Card (ARC) you will need to have a 4 year degree. Some people have been known to use fake degrees and get away with it while others have been caught. A large amount of people work illegally with out a permit as cram schools are always looking for a white face to put in their classroom for the parents to see, it's all about the parents here as they're the ones paying the fees. (maybe this is why Taiwan still doesn't have a good level of English??) For more info on requirements see links at the bottom. How much will I earn? This depends on how many hours you are willing to teach, the normal hourly pay is anywhere from 500NT - 800NT per hour or 16USD - 26USD per hour. Salaried jobs are common too usually coming with a guaranteed monthly paycheck and a higher workload. It should be noted that it is illegal to teach English in ANY kindergarten yet many people still do as their is a big market for it (more parents with money to burn) Finding a job which will provide you with a 40 hour work week at one school is becoming increasingly difficult not to mention the stress of teaching 40 hours a week! Most teachers will fill up their work week by working at various school legally and illegally. Working 30 hours a week at 600NT will give you 72,000NT per month or 2350USD per month, not bad considering how easy most of the work is and the price of accommodation and food. My Thoughts on Teaching in Taiwan Teaching in Taiwan is great as a gap year or to earn some extra money while experiencing a very different culture overseas, as for those thinking of doing it long-term I would say sign up for a year first and see how you like it then decide, Don't forget to decide though as there are already too many foreigners lost in the timewarp that is Taiwan! ~Chris
